NEW UK GOVERNMENT EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYERS AND AGENCIES:

Section 8 of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 requires all employers in the United Kingdom to make basic document checks on every person they intend to employ.

From 1st May 2004 the UK Government requires all UK employers to abide by the above for 3 key reasons:

1) to make it harder for people who do not have permission to work in the UK to obtain work using forged or false documents;

2) to make it easier for employers to ensure that they employ people who are legally permitted to work in the UK;

3) to strengthen the UK Government's controls on tackling illegal working by making it easier for the UK Immigration Service to take action against employers who deliberately use illegal labour.

If you are from the European Economic Area (EAA) you can enter and work in the UK without any restrictions just like British citizens.

The EEA is made up of the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom

The UK Government has decided that nationals from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia will be required to register with the Home Office if they start working in the UK after 1st May 2004.

Voovs.com as a recruitment portal will assist all UK employers with this new legislation by asking all new job seekers to supply a copy of their passport, a p45, p60 or National Insurance Card when they register. This will then be forwarded to the employer with your CV application.

Working in Europe

Do you need an EU passport to work in Europe?
This can vary depending on the employer. Most employers insist that you must have a European Union passport or proof of EEA membership as per above to work within an EC or EEA member country. Some employers do legally employ people with a UK working visa and National Insurance number.

There is no clear and fast rule, in general yes, you do need a work visa or an EC/EEA passport but you should always check the advert and with the employer before taking a job.

Have I got any distant relatives with EC passports that I can use to claim one for myself? That should be a question you ask and investigate as this will help you to find work if you have.

Use the services of the companies above if you are applying as they have years of experience and can help!

Right of Abode, UK Working Visas & Ancestry Visas
These are not normally sufficient to work in EU countries. Ancestry visas, right of abode and UK working visas do not count as an EU passport or an EC work visa.

Can I work illegally?
We can not give advice about working illegally, it is a choice that you have but we can only say be careful and be aware that you are at risk as well as the employer if you are caught. People without visas still manage to find work within Europe so it really depends on how keen you are to find a job.
